About the Life Project for Rural Cambodians
The Life Project began in 2012 with our first trip to Cambodia, bringing medical and school supplies to Cambodia’s poor families living in remote villages in three provinces. After that first trip, Rev. Thysan Sam led a trip every year, reaching out with God’s love, offering both physical and spiritual care.
The Life Project was inactive for three years from 2020 to 2022 due to Covid 19. The last activities were in 2019 right before the Covid 19 lockdown. In 2019 we built four toilets, repaired two school buildings, and provided school uniforms and school materials to poor children in two rural locations.
In 2023 the Life Project started its mission again with a new focus: supporting Green Bethel Community, a mission church which is at a city landfill, the biggest landfill in Cambodia.
About Green Bethel
More than 2,000 people live right inside the landfill, including children. There are no schools and there is no medical care for those people. The landfill size is about 43 football fields and more than 400 garbage trucks dump garbage in it daily.
Korean missionaries have started a ministry, called Green Bethel Community, with those people, including a church, a preschool with two kindergarten classes, an elementary school from first to fifth grades, a medical clinic, special sport classes, and vocational training for youth.
New focus for the Life Project
In 2023 when Pastor Thysan was in Cambodia, he attended the worship service with the community living in the landfill, and bought rice and other kinds of food for them. After he came back to the US, he talked with Eliot Church’s Cambodians and other Life Project supporters, and decided to take the dumpsite church as the Life Project’s primary focus.
In 2024 the Life Project for Rural Cambodians, with its new focus, will develop a steering committee and raise funds to support the work of the Korean missionaries.
