Responsibilities
The Pastor of Eliot Church will be responsible for the five areas of church life listed below. The pastor may choose to take on additional tasks, but generally Eliot Church hopes that its members will share in the work of the church, not asking the pastor to do everything.
Worship: The pastor will be responsible for planning the worship services and preaching, teaching the word of God.
Spiritual care: The pastor will have office hours when people can come with spiritual concerns. The pastor will support people in the congregation in times of need, offering their presence, prayer, and love. At times of emergency, the pastor may be called on outside of their regular working hours.
Prayer and Bible study: The pastor will foster the prayer life of the congregation and ensure that there are opportunities for all to participate in Bible study.
Vision for ministry: The pastor will develop a vision for the ministry of Eliot Church, both within the congregation and in outreach to our neighbors. The pastor will focus on the big picture and engage staff and church members in carrying out the ministry.
Leadership development: The pastor will serve as head of staff, guiding and encouraging church employees, including our Cambodian Chaplains, church workers, and Day Center staff. The pastor will also guide and train church leaders, including Elders, Deacons, and committee chairs.
Gifts and skills desired
Eliot Church is looking for a pastor first of all who will be our spiritual leader and Bible teacher, a person with deep faith. We are looking for a person who will care deeply about the congregation as well as our building and its surroundings.
Experience interacting with diverse people would be most helpful, but an openness to diversity and a desire to get to know a variety of people will suffice. The pastor of Eliot Church will need to be comfortable with human interaction within a wide variety of situations, from the Sanctuary to the street.
Eliot Church is not a picturesque New England church; we need a pastor whose preference is to work in an urban setting.
Other skills that would be helpful are the ability to communicate effectively, including through the use of technology; strong organizational skills; and experience with management, including focusing on a clear mission, overseeing staff, and developing and implementing policies for a ministry such as our Day Center.
Fluency in more than one language would also be a plus.
To apply, please send your resume and statement of faith by email to pnc2025@eliotlowell.org.
To be considered for this position, a person must be ordained in the PCUSA or in one of our “Formula Partners”: Reformed Church in America, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or the United Church of Christ.
